Meet Our Staff:
Richard Yavel, CPA
Richard Yavel is a born and bred Brooklynite. He received an MBA in accounting from Pace University and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in New York and Florida. Accounting was a second career for him, having completed a Master’s degree in counseling and working for almost ten years with urban youth providing work skills training opportunities.
Richard moved to Park Slope Brooklyn, where he has resided since 1973. Having raised two wonderful sons here, Richard was an early volunteer and assistant coach in kid’s baseball. He was also one of the original supporters of the “Garfield Playground” in Prospect Park. In those days, the city was “broke” and these kinds of additions came from local public support. In addition, Richard has served on the Board as treasurer of a local non-profit arts foundation.
Richard founded the CPA firm that was originally “Smolin & Yavel” in 1984, which quickly became the largest coop/condo accounting firm in the area. Richard has been serving Brownstone Brooklyn and Manhattan coops and condos from his office on Seventh Avenue ever since. Having been one of the earliest firms to work with the coop/condo market, Richard has often been quoted in newspapers, providing insight into the complexities of coop/condo financial and tax issues.
The firm has built a solid reputation over the years for providing trusted, personalized service.
When not producing “debits and credits”, there are actually many things he enjoys. At the top of his list are, spending time with his two sons, amateur photography, and gardening.
A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Irwin Rubin joined Richard Yavel & Associates in 1999 after over twenty-five years managing several mental health programs. Irwin brings his managerial experiences to the firm and it reflects in his thoughtful and personal approach with clients. He’s a great “hand holder”, as he explains various complicated tax matters and such to our clients.
A person of many and diverse interests, Irwin has served on the boards of Temple Beth Emeth in Prospect Park South , PS 193 in Midwood, and AFSCME DC 1707. He is an avid swimmer as well as an active amateur photographer. As the Administrative Partner at Richard Yavel & Associates he strives to make “all this numbers stuff and regulations” understandable to the firm’s clients. He is also the loving grandfather of five grandchildren.
You are likely to receive a warm hello from Irwin if you’re walking In Park Slope or Prospect Park on weekends. He’s out there walking much of the time and has a knack for remembering the names and faces of his many clients.
